Gainesville, Fla. (WFLA) – A man was arrested Friday in connection with a series of incidents involving sexually explicit and inappropriate behavior against a University of Florida student.
In the release, the Gainesville Police Department and University of Florida Public Safety announced the arrest of 38-year-old Riley Washington after a series of incidents reported by UF students last weekend.
The investigation began after students came forward and reported “intrusive” encounters with individuals who described sexual and natural expressions, described as sexual behavior and made them feel unsafe.
Gainesville Police Department said it had developed a surveillance plan to find and monitor suspects, with support from UPD.
“Washington’s actions are escalating with severity and have taken prompt action to prevent further victims,” said GPD chief Nelson Moya. “I commend both of our agency’s supportive work and support in leading this case to a prompt and safe resolution.”
“Public safety is a common responsibility,” said UPD chief Bart Knowles.
Both agencies are urging people who may have had similar encounters with Washington or to advance additional information related to the THSI incident.
Washington is being held at the Alachua County Jail on charges of sexual battery, routering, wandering, and stalking.
