In the second period, the Panthers controlled most of the play. At 5-on-5, they led 25-11 in shot attempts, 11-5 in shots on goal and 8-4 in scoring opportunities. But despite attacking the Devils in waves, the Devils were unable to extend their lead as Allen towered between the pipes.
Tested on special teams, the Panthers killed nearly four minutes of Devils power play time and finished the middle frame with just two shots on goal. Through the first four games of the homestand, they made 12 of 14 on the penalty kill.
“I felt like our penalty shootout was pretty good today,” said defenseman Niko Mikkola, who clinched the win with shorthanded 1 minute 38 seconds of ice time. “We stayed alert. It was a great kill.”
In the third period, Bobrovsky scored two crucial points for the Panthers.
Of his 31 saves, 12 came in the third period.
He stopped five shots in the final 1 minute and 09 seconds, securing the shutout and victory.
“Thanks to Bobby, (the save) was huge and gave us two points,” Mikkola said.
