Tallahassee, Fla. (WFLA) – How long is someone to serve in the Florida Legislature?

To end the bouncing back and forth between the House and Senators, Senator Blaise Ingoglia of R-Spring Hill is pushing for limiting lawmakers to a maximum of 16 years in office. Senate.

Florida State Legislators launch another special session on illegal immigration

“If you’re serving in Congress, it should be a privilege and an honor, not a career. Unfortunately, it will be a career for some,” Ingoglia said.

The decision will be left to the Florida voters.

Senator Ingoglia has introduced constitutional amendments to be featured in the November 2026 vote. This asks if the Capitol should limit the time of state legislators.
“There is currently an eight-year term limit in the House and an eight-year term limit in the Senate,” Ingoglia said. “But what we’ve seen over the years is that people are house members for eight years, they’re senators for eight years, they’re going back to the house for eight years, they’re going back to the Senate for eight years, they’re going back to the Senate for eight years, they’re going back to the Senate for eight years. With a period limit. โ€

The trend of moving between chambers is nothing new. Political analysts have been heavily on the issue, saying that Tallahassee has many lawmakers who have joined the cycle.
“This is a great Florida tradition for individuals to serve in one room, serve in another room, then go back and go back to another office,” said Tara Newsom, a political analyst at St. Pete College. I said that. “And of course, we know that we don’t necessarily want to make it a career of being an elected official, but we don’t want to lose all of that institutional memory.”

More recently, former Senator and now re-elected representative of Debbie Mayfield, R-Melbourne, was told that when Senator R-Brevard intervened in March to run for Congress. We talked about plans to chase the old Senate seat.

However, Mayfield was disqualified from the 2025 special election for the 19th District Senate race.
Mayfield posted on X. “Today’s Gov Desantis punished me for using government agencies to support Donald J Trump for the President. For the people of Brevard.”

It remains to be seen whether the amendment will reach the 2026 vote, and whether there is a level of support or opposition that may be faced as the legislative session approaches.
