st. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — State Sen. Daryl Luson is nearing the end of his term. The current longest-sitting Democrat in Tallahassee is term restricted as he runs again to maintain his current seat. However, he is considering whether to run for a seat in the Florida House of Representatives.
“I’m thinking of it. God only knows the following,” Luson said.
Longtime lawmakers represent District 16, part of St. Petersburg. His district will also enter Tampa and other parts of Hillsboro County.

Luson said his voice could be used as a civilian or perhaps as an elected official in another seat.
“It’s nice to have options,” Luson said. “Experience and relationships are equal to success. I have experience. I’ve built relationships over the years. I think I’ve been pretty successful in Congress.”
The personal injury lawyer is known for his work on mental health law after his battle with past addictions.
“There was stigma surrounding mental health and substance use disorders, but over those 17 years the conversation has turned into more relief efforts,” Luson said.
In June, lawmakers and Gov. Ron DeSantis agreed to name USF mental health facilities after a St. Petersburg-based Democrat. Luson is respected on both sides of the aisle.
He is also familiar with former Congressman David Jolly running for governor following his switch to Democrats. Jolie also lives in Pinellas County.
“I’ve had experience with Mr. Jolie, and I think he’s a good guy, but I haven’t gotten any support in that race yet,” Luson said.
District 16 is subject to federal court cases. A group of voters sued the allegations of illegal racial gerrymandering. Those involved in the lawsuit expect to hear the verdict from a three-judge panel on whether the state will be forced to redraw the district. State lawmakers also have not given approval for candidates who announced the District 16 run.
