How is the Easter date determined? Why is it late this year?
The timing of holidays varies from year to year. According to Old Farmers Almanac, Easter and Easter Orthodox Easter will fall on the same day this year.
“Easter is a ‘movable east feast’ so it does not occur on the same day every year. In the Gregorian calendar, it is always observed from Sunday, March 22nd to April 25th,โ says Almanac.
Easter will fall on the first Sunday after Paschal Full Moon, the first full moon that will occur after March 21st.
In 325, the Council of Nicaea ordered Easter and confusing situations of different dates at various locations by being celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon of spring equestrians. If that full moon falls on a Sunday, Easter is the next Sunday.
The council’s order ultimately became the standard.

In early Christian churches, Lent was first observed over six weeks, with fasting taking place over a total of 36 days, except on Sundays. In the 7th century, the period was extended to 42 days to coincide with a 40-day fasting that is believed to reflect Jesus’ time in the desert.
Catholics, Baptists, Anglicans, Methodists, Presbyterians, and others receive ashes on their foreheads in a pattern of crosses to remind them of their mortality. Ash is created by burning the palm from the previous year’s palm Sunday.
