HOLLES COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Board has identified a second case of chronic wasting disease infection in a deer in Holmes County.
Officials with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Board have announced that a 1.5-year-old female deer who was hit by a vehicle along the road has tested positive for the disease. It was discovered less than a mile from Florida’s first CWD incident in deer in 2023.
Chronic wasting disease, also known as zombie deer disease, affects the brain and central nervous system of animals. There are no cures or vaccines, and they are always deadly for deer.

The FWC is implementing a comprehensive response plan to contain the disease in areas where the disease is detected. Although CWD is not transmitted to humans, wildlife authorities strongly recommend that you not eat meat from infected deer.
The two incidents were in very close proximity, and the FWC maintains a management plan and an enhanced monitoring zone.
If you find a dead deer or a live deer that appears sick or thin, call the Chronic Depletion Disease Hotline at 866-293-9282.
