Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was invited to the U.S. Term Limits organization and invited to meet with legislative members of the Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate, encouraging the passage of a resolution calling for term limits for members of Congress. Florida passed the House of Representatives Simultaneous Resolution (HCR) 693 at its 2024 legislative meeting, calling for a U.S. Term-Limit Treaty based on Paul Renner’s tenure. Florida is also one of a group of 12 states that passed resolutions through both rooms in the state legislature to make such applications for the treaty.
“D.C. will never fix it,” Gov. Ron Desantis said. “The time limit will change the incentives for Congress members to focus on reelection and focus on concrete outcomes.”

The US Constitution provides state legislatures with the power to propose amendments without Congressional approval. To call the US time limit treaty, two-thirds of the 50 states must pass a similar solution. Currently, Florida, Alabama, Indiana, Louisiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, West Virginia and Wisconsin have passed resolutions seeking a U.S. period-limitation treaty, but other states have passed such solutions in a single chamber or before vote law.
