Ripley opens indoor mini golf course at Icon Park Orlando

Ripley’s Crazy Golf Orlando is now open to the public at Icon Park on International Drive. One of the featured props is a golden toilet, but that’s not even the strangest part of the experience.

The ball will keep score for you.

It’s an RFID chip. “When your ball sinks into the LED cup at the end of the hole, your score will automatically be displayed on the scoreboard TV above,” Crazy Golf’s monitor explains.

No more using tiny little pencils or fudging tallies. Admittedly, I haven’t been in mini golf circles for a while, but this seems innovative.

However, that may not be the most memorable part of this attraction. The attraction includes 27 holes of an indoor course studded with daylight decorations and the kind of non-traditional putting challenge you’d probably expect from a “believe it or not” vendor.

There are also holes based on pinball games, vending machines, air hockey, Simon Says and beer pong, which Ripley calls trick shots. There are holes where players hit the ball with a raised hammer, and holes where giant hands move with the action (“The Slapper”).

“You can really let out your frustrations on that hole,” said Chris Reyna, general manager of Orlando’s Ripley Attraction.

A popular spot for previewers was the hole, which used a loop-the-loop track that sent the ball flying toward the hole.

All of this is accomplished without using a putter. There are some more traditional halls, but most have quirky themes. This is a sort of internal shout-out to the genuine 18-carat (and functional) gold toilet the company bought at auction last year for $12.1 million. (For the record, both make a flashing sound.)

Also unusual are rotating obstacles, like modern windmill distractions, and holes featuring pigeons, the foosball man.

“I grew up in the ’90s and early 2000s. I remember going to miniature golf as a kid, and the course had a lot of movement that you don’t really see today, so there had to be a windmill here,” Reyna said.

“And it’s one of the most difficult courses, so I kind of regret it at the moment,” he laughed.

Characters include a mustachioed frog named Sir Hops-A-Lot and a frog named Chubby Chip. Strange faces and eyeballs pop up from the ceiling. We sell cocktails and mocktails such as Dragonberry on the Fairway and Water Hazard Rita. There’s also one called The Dave. (Pay attention to each green cup holder) Special popcorn is also on sale.

Each hall is flanked by flashing barriers, surrounded by glow-in-the-dark figures and video screens as the music blares. I can’t say it’s soothing, but it’s certainly interesting.

“It’s like pop art and the rave scene,” Reyna said. “I think it will be very popular with everyone involved in EDC in November.”

Ripley’s Crazy Golf, open daily at 11 a.m., is located in the corner of Icon Park next to the Museum of Illusions. The space previously housed Max Action and a drug store. This is the second Crazy Golf location operated by Orlando-based Ripley Entertainment, following an 18-hole version in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The Orlando course costs $24.99 ($19.99 for ages 3-11). The attraction offers 9-hole and 18-hole pricing. It takes between 45 minutes and an hour to play all 27 holes.

In addition to golf, Ripley also offers combo tickets that include the nearby Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum (sinkhole building) and the adjacent Ripley’s Mirror Maze attraction. There is a slight overlap between courses regarding similar holes.

A little weirdness at the end. For a limited time, those who donate their hair to the record-setting hairball located near the entrance will receive 25% off the price of their combo ticket.
