Republicans target Florida House Democratic seat over voter ID

Most Americans support photo ID for voting by an overwhelming margin.

The Pew Research study broke down the numbers by party affiliation and demographics.

Supported:

95% of Republicans

71% of Democrats

82% of Hispanic Americans

76% of black Americans

83% of Americans support requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote for the first time.

However, despite strong support from Democrats, every Democrat in Florida voted against the Save Act, which recently passed the U.S. House of Representatives 223-206.

The bill would require individuals to present a valid form of identification, such as a birth certificate or passport, before voting.

Democrats oppose the bill because it requires a photo ID to vote.

Democrats have called the bill “voter suppression” or “Jim Crow 2.0.” Florida Congressman Maxwell Frost called it “a project of authoritarian fascism.”

Republicans are currently trying to pick up Democratic seats when the state Legislature convenes a special session in April to discuss redistricting issues.

Two of the races they are targeting in the 2026 midterm elections are those of South Florida Democrats Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Jared Moskowitz.

President Trump posted on social media that the preservation bill was a “top priority” heading into the midterm elections and encouraged Senate Republicans to force Democrats to filibuster the bill.

Under this approach, senators seeking to block a bill would need to hold the floor continuously and debate measures to prevent the bill from moving forward. Modern filibusters allow senators to block bills without continuing the floor, meaning bills can stall without lengthy debate.

Florida’s upcoming legislative redistricting could threaten safe seats for Democrats.

Florida Republican state lawmakers have already passed their own version, called the Florida “SAVE Act.”
