TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – A new study from Wallethub shows that some of Florida cities are the most expensive for renters.
This study calculated the percentage of income people spend on rent in more than 180 cities in the US.
Some of the cheapest cities, like Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Cheyenne, Wyoming, spend on average about 16% of their income on rent.
In more expensive cities, renters spend twice as much money as nearly 30% of their income.
According to the survey, Miami renters spend more rent than renters in other U.S. cities, which are up to 33% of their annual household income.
This will make Miami at the bottom of the list and Orlando far ahead. The tenants there are slightly better conditions, with the average person spending around 28% of the rent.
Many Florida cities are about 26-27% hovering, including Port St. Lucie, Cape Coral, Tallahassee, Fort Lauderdale and Tampa. That’s about the same as what tenants can expect in New York City.
Of Florida’s major cities, Jacksonville hopes to spend the minimum percentage of its income on rent, about 24.6%.
Even in big cities like Seattle, San Francisco and Chicago, renters spend only about 20-22% of their income.
Jacksonville ranked 121 out of 182 cities surveyed, with Florida cities not entering the top 100.
