Golden retrievers are the most Googled dog breed in America, holding the top spot in 49 of the 50 states, according to a new study.
The study, conducted by Pup Lab, a targeted dog supplement provider, analyzed Google search data from across the United States to determine which dog breeds Americans are most interested in heading into 2026.

The most popular dog breeds in the state are the Golden Retriever, with an average monthly search of 83,569 searches, the French Bulldog with 58,377 searches, and the Australian Shepherd with 53,844 searches. Next is the German Shepherd with 50,008 cases, followed by the Belgian Malinois with 47,473 cases.

The Golden Retriever ranks No. 1 with over 1 million monthly searches in the U.S., 40% more than the second most popular dog breed in the study, the Australian Shepherd (768,967 searches on average). French Bulldogs are searched 733,863 times per month, ranking No. 3 in the nation.
Golden retrievers are the most searched dog breed in every state except Utah. California residents show the greatest love for Golden Retrievers, with 136,922 monthly searches for Golden Retrievers, the most of any breed in any state. Texas followed with 97,708 searches, and Florida rounded out the top three states with 83,719 monthly searches for Golden Retrievers.

Utah is the only state with the most Bernese Mountain Dogs, with 10,160 searches per month. However, Golden Retrievers are a close second with 10,125 monthly searches in Utah.
The study revealed surprising findings about traditionally popular varieties. The Labrador Retriever, often listed as America’s most popular dog breed by registration organizations, was only 27th with 239,332 monthly searches. Beagles came in at number 59 with just 140,915 monthly searches.

Methodology: To reveal rankings, average monthly search volume data was obtained from Google Keyword Planner based on searches over a 12-month period from March 2024 to February 2025. The top 288 most popular dog breeds were analyzed based on the following searches:[dog_breed] Breeding”, “[dog_breed] dog”, “[dog_breed] It’s near me”,”[dog_breed] Puppies for sale”,”[dog_breed] puppy”,”[dog_breed] Rescue”, “Adoption” [dog_breed]”, “Purchase” [dog_breed]The total search volume for each dog breed’s search term was calculated and used to rank and determine the five most popular dog breeds in each state.
