Talahassee, Fla. (WFLA) – Florida’s efforts to change birds have failed again this year.
Mockingbirds, who hold the state bird title in four additional states, remain Florida’s top birds as legislative sessions approach the end.
The twin bill introduced in the state Senate and House would have made American flamingos an official state songbird to official birds and scrub jays.
It’s not that easy to find flamingos in the wild in Florida, but bright pink birds have become synonymous with sunlight. Scrub Jay is Florida’s only endemic bird species. In other words, you can only find it here, not only native.
The House version of the bill has never been heard. The Senate version was appointed to the Rules Committee, but it was not possible to go further.
