President Trump said Sunday that he plans to issue an executive order temporarily suspending the ban on video app TikTok within hours of taking office as the 47th president of the United States.

The app went dark around 10:30pm on Saturday, January 18, 90 minutes before the shutdown deadline. TikTok users in the United States received a pop-up that said, “We’re sorry, TikTok is currently unavailable.”

In a post on TruthSocial Sunday, President Trump said he was issuing an executive order “extending the period until the law’s ban goes into effect so that we can reach agreements that protect our national security.”

TikTok restored service soon after.

“This is a strong position in support of the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship,” the company said in a statement. “We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution to keep TikTok in the United States.

Presidential actions and executive orders are not the same thing.

Administrative actions are not published in the Federal Register and are not subject to legal review.
