Today is Inauguration Day.
At noon today, Monday, January 20th (also MLK Day), Donald Trump will be inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States.
But when will he return to the White House? Will he live there at all?
Here’s a short list of presidents who lived elsewhere while in office, when presidents can move to the White House, and what you need to know about Inauguration Day.
Does the President have to live in the White House?
There are no laws or regulations that require the President of the United States to reside in the White House.
The first president, George Washington, did not live there either.
“President George Washington chose this location and approved the design, but he never actually lived in the White House,” the White House Historical Society’s website says.
“He finished his time as chief executive in 1797 and died in 1799, one year before the seat of the federal government moved from Philadelphia to the city that bore his name. He lived in a mansion.”
Below is a list of other presidents who lived elsewhere during their administrations, according to the White House Historical Association.
President Adams: “While the White House was nearing completion, President Adams temporarily lived at the Tunnicliffe City Hotel near the Capitol. President Madison: “On August 24, 1814, the White House was set on fire. After being killed, President James Madison moved to the nearby Octagon House for about 6 President Monroe: “President James Monroe occupied the Timothy Caldwell House during his term as Madison’s secretary.” , and then served as president for a short time. President Monroe embarked on an extensive tour of the northern states in June 1817 and returned to Washington in September of the same year. A public ceremony was held to welcome him, which lasted until his arrival at the White House. About a month later, in October, he and his family moved into the White House. ” President Roosevelt: “In 1902, Theodore Roosevelt used 736 Jackson Place as his temporary executive residence while the White House was undergoing renovations, and he and his family also spent time together. For a while. President Truman spent most of his time away from Washington at his home in New York, Sagamore Hill. “1948 During major renovations to the White House in 2012, President Harry S. Truman lived across the street from the house.”He lived on Pennsylvania Avenue in Blair House for about three and a half years. ”
Indoor Inauguration: President Trump’s inauguration was held indoors due to severe cold weather expected.
When will the president move into the White House?
President-elect Donald Trump could enter the White House as early as today, Inauguration Day. Whether he spends as much time there as he does at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach is entirely up to him.
After Joe Biden was elected in 2020, his staff began entering the White House on Inauguration Day.
PBS reported that “President Joe Biden’s team has begun moving to the White House” at around 3:30 p.m. on the day of Biden’s 2021 inauguration.
“Hours after Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday, the building opened again as the new president’s staff began moving into offices, unpacking their belongings and obtaining badges that would allow easy access to the grounds. It started to become lively.”
Inaugural events are planned by the Congressional Joint Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCIC) and include the oath of office, inaugural address, and vetting. Other events associated with the inauguration include the inaugural parade and the inaugural ball.
What is the official first pitch?
Every four years, various galas, balls, and parties are held before and after the inauguration to celebrate the new president. The number of official inaugural balls varies by president, and unofficial inaugural balls are held by corporations and state associations.
The Presidential Ball, planned and sanctioned by the Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC), is a private event not open to the public. Unlike other inaugural events, you cannot request tickets to the official inaugural ball. Also, there probably won’t be a livestream of the official inaugural ball.
The PIC website lists three official inaugural balls for President-elect Trump.
