MIAMI, Fla. (WFLA) – Three baby otters joined the Zoo Miami this week to participate in the Florida: Mission Everglades exhibition.

Zinnia, a 7-year-old North American otter, gave birth to three puppies on February 12th. The Zoo Animal Health and Animal Science team determined that the baby was one man and two women.

According to the zoo, the puppy weighs between 164 and 168 grams and is expected to reach weights between 12 and 25.

Before carrying the baby for about two months, Zinnia delivered it to a remote den, marking the third garbage. Mom and her puppy stay behind the scenes, unite and grow with minimal disturbance.

Zoo Miami said the trash was fathered by 9-year-old Edison and arrived at the zoo in October 2016 after being rescued as an orphan in Florida. Zinnia arrived at Roger Williams Park Zoo in Rhode Island in April 2019, where she was born.

North American otters can live in the wild for about 10 years, but can live up to 20 years under human care, Zoo Miami said. They eat a variety of animals, including fish, frogs and crustaceans.

These otters are known to be agile swimmers and can run up to 15 mph on land.
