Orlando and Tampa ranked among top five college cities in America

In a recent ranking of more than 400 U.S. cities, WalletHub evaluated a variety of factors, including academic, social, and economic, to identify the best college towns and cities in the United States. The research aimed to not only pinpoint great academic environments, but also highlight places where students can enjoy, be engaged and grow during their time at university and after graduation.

According to WalletHub research, Orlando achieved a remarkable ranking of #3 among U.S. college cities. The main factor behind this high ranking is affordability. The total cost of tuition (including room and board) for in-state students in Orlando is estimated at approximately $24,668 per year, making it one of the most economical options among the cities surveyed.

However, affordability is only part of the story. Orlando’s strength also lies in its “enrichment of students outside of class”. This means the city offers a wide range of non-academic opportunities including theme parks, shopping centres, sports clubs, recreation and entertainment that enhance the student experience. Additionally, Orlando performs well on job market indicators, with some of the lowest unemployment rates and highest job growth rates in the nation, allowing graduates to remain in the city after completing their studies. Tampa also received high marks, coming in at No. 4 on WalletHub’s “Best College Towns & Cities” list.

The presence of two Florida cities at the top of the list, Orlando and Tampa, highlights a broader trend. In other words, Florida is well represented as a top college town destination. What makes Tampa special? The city offers a vibrant urban environment and student-centered lifestyle, featuring an active nightlife, diverse amenities, access to the Gulf Coast, and several institutions of higher learning, including the University of South Florida and the University of Tampa. Tampa’s ranking benefited from a dynamic blend of academic opportunities, student life, and regional attractions.

The success of both Orlando and Tampa provides an interesting comparison. Orlando is great for its affordable prices, great job prospects after graduation, and plenty of entertainment and recreation options. In contrast, Tampa emphasizes an urban student lifestyle within a metropolitan area, offering rich local culture and coastal recreation. Together, they show how different types of college towns can thrive. One focuses on affordability and entertainment, the other on city amenities and coastal living.

For test takers who are confused about which one to choose, the choice is clear. If affordability and a wealth of off-campus activities are your top priorities, Orlando may be your best bet. If you prefer a more urban feel with access to the coast and a variety of city experiences, Tampa may be a better choice.

It’s also important to note that the appeal of staying in either city after college is further enhanced by strong job growth and positive economic indicators, which WalletHub cites as important factors. Another takeaway is how WalletHub’s approach focuses on the “whole student’s life.” The study did not rank cities solely based on academic indicators. Factors such as the social environment, cost of living, job prospects, and student life comfort were also taken into account. Analysts at WalletHub say, “Towns with lower costs of living, more activities, and larger student populations can make college life much less stressful and more enjoyable.”

Of course, just because they’re ranked third and fourth doesn’t mean Orlando and Tampa don’t have their flaws. Each city has its own tradeoffs. Orlando’s affordability may be offset by its high tourism and traffic volume, while Tampa’s urban size may come with a higher cost of living and difficult commuting. Nevertheless, WalletHub data shows that both cities offer great value and experiences for college students compared to many other cities in the United States.

In conclusion, the inclusion of Orlando and Tampa in the top five college cities is significant. This article highlights that Florida has more to offer than just a warm climate and beaches, it also offers real value and a vibrant student environment. Both of these cities are worth considering for those considering further education or living in a college city.
