Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, Fla. (WFLA) – The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office announced it will issue fines to motorists who speed through school zones as part of Operation Safe Passage.
Starting today, anyone speeding through a school zone will be fined $100.
Riverview High School was the first to launch Operation Safe Passage, and cameras have been running for months.
Those caught speeding in the area have been given written warnings, but drivers will now be cited and fined.
This program is a way to crack down on drivers who speed through school zones.
“People were just flying by,” Hillsborough County teacher Ellis Silver said.
Eight on Your Side spoke to county teacher Elise Silver, who said flashing yellow lights and speed limit signs weren’t enough when the cameras went off.
“There are railroad crossing guards at the scene honking their horns and wearing yellow reflective gear, but that doesn’t help,” Silver said.
This program uses camera technology in school zones to prevent speeding and keep students safe.
The new initiative refers to drivers who exceed the speed limit by more than 16 miles per hour in school zones.
The speed limit outside Riverview High School is 20 mph
Operation Safe Passage began in November 2024, but drivers are no longer issued with warnings.
“Ensuring children get to and from school safely is critical to their success,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. I am proud to announce our program, Operation Safe Passage.”
All of these efforts hope to help children get to and from school safely.
“That’s what we need, we need reinforcements,” Silver said.
The launch of the program at Riverview High School will bring more than 25 other schools in the county online in the coming months.
