TAMPA, Fla. – The City of Tampa is rolling out the Homeowner Hurricane Assistance Program, a $2 million initiative aimed at helping residents in the hardest-hit areas.
City leaders said these are unrestricted general fund funds, giving the city additional flexibility.
Tampa homeowners who sustained significant damage from Hurricanes Helen and Milton will be able to apply for new repair assistance starting November 17th.
“Prioritization will be done by zip code. And we really want to get the funds to the people in the hardest hit areas, so that would be 3360, 533605, 33612 and 33616,” Development and Economic Opportunity Manager Abby Feely said.
The fund, approved by the City Council, will provide up to $30,000 per household for storm-related repairs.
“So many people lost everything…The vast majority of these people, many of these people, didn’t have flood insurance because they were in Zone X,” said City Councilman Luis Vera.
To qualify, homeowners must live within the Tampa city limits and meet income requirements of up to about $160,000 for a family of four. Homeowners should be prepared to present documentation that meets the criteria.
“They’re going to need proof of home ownership. They’re going to need to keep their mortgage current. They’re going to need some other documents that our team will help them with,” Feeley said.
Once launched, the program will run through Dec. 12 and residents can apply online or by phone through the city’s Housing Information Line.
