MIAMI, Fla. (WFLA) – A Miami Beach Police Department driver was killed Tuesday in a crash along the northbound lanes of Interstate 75, officials said.

The accident occurred Tuesday morning near Northwest 138th Street and left Officer David Cajuso in critical condition. The man was airlifted to a nearby trauma center, where he later succumbed to his injuries, Miami Beach police said.

“Officer Cajuso faithfully served the Miami Beach community for 10 years with courage and unwavering dedication to public service,” authorities wrote in a social media post sharing news of his death.

The circumstances of the crash remained unclear Tuesday afternoon. The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation, according to Miami Beach Police.

Kajuso is survived by his wife and three children. The agency plans to share funeral arrangements once they are complete.

“Please keep Officer Cajuso’s family and loved ones in your thoughts during this difficult time,” Miami Beach Police said in a statement.
