HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — The Hernando County, Florida Health Department has discovered locally acquired West Nile virus infection in guard chickens.
DOH-Hernando informs residents about this infectious disease and suggests basic precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
These defenses include using repellents to protect yourself, emptying all outdoor containers of water to prevent breeding, and using air conditioning to keep mosquitoes outdoors.
DOH-Hernando and Hernando County Mosquito Control Office are coordinating preventive measures including spraying to control mosquitoes.
The Florida Department of Health said the agency will continue to monitor and track mosquito-borne diseases. The department encourages residents to report dead birds to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission website.
