HOBE SONG, Fla. (WFLA) — First responders say it’s nothing more than a “miracle” after a young swimmer who went missing on Sunday was found 500 yards off the coast of Florida.

Martin County Firefighters received a call about a missing swimmer just before 5:30pm on Sunday. Firefighters said it was a phone that always gives a “sinking feeling.”

His father lost sight of him in the water as the teenager swam near a blowing rock reserve had fallen.

According to Martin County Fire Rescue, a “large and emotional” response continued, with crews from multiple agencies spending more than an hour searching for the boy.

Officials said they “want the best, but are preparing for the worst.”

The private captain of Towboat USA then spotted the boy about a mile north of where he was last seen. The teenager was drawn out of the water, and his first counterpart came to pick him up and medically cleared him.

In a social media post on Sunday night, Martin County Firefighters said the boy was OK and now he’s back with his family.

“After the owner’s deaths of two devastating children in Martin County in the last 48 hours, we cannot express our gratitude for the fact that we have ended differently today,” an official said Sunday.
