PINECREST, Fla. (WFLA) — The first case of measles in Miami-Dade County was detected this year on Tuesday after authorities said one student at a district school was diagnosed with the disease.

According to WPLG, officials at Miami-Dade public schools confirmed that the incident was reported at Miami Palmetto High School in Pinecrest.

Nine states report cases of measles as the outbreak grows

A letter obtained by CBS News Miami showed that the infected person was a high school student. A letter sent to parents said the school plans to hold a vaccination drive for unvaccinated students with parental consent next week.

The local health department is also working to notify those who have been in close contact with infected students.

It is unclear whether the students were at school on Tuesday. The exact date that the student tested positive was also unknown.

The news comes amid reports of measles outbreaks in at least nine states, including Texas, where the number of people diagnosed has increased to over 100.

One unvaccinated child has passed away. It marks the first measles death in the United States since 2015.
