Former Florida Rep. Matt Getz is considering a bid for the Florida governor in 2026 despite facing important legal and ethical controversy.
Gaetz served in Florida’s 1st Congressional District from 2017 until he resigned in November 2024. However, Gaetz resurfaced allegations of sexual misconduct, including claims of gender payments for drug use at 17 years old, and thus withdrawn from consideration. The Justice Department closed its investigation without charges, but a House Ethics Committee report released in December 2024 found evidence in support of some of these allegations.
After resigning from Congress, Gaetz launched “The Matt Gaetz Show” on the One America News Network, taking part in cameos, providing personalized videos of over $500 each.
In early 2025, Gaetz expressed interest in running for governor of Florida in 2026, discussing his ambitions with Trump. He highlighted the consumer agenda, focusing specifically on insurance reform.

Republican Party’s main landscape
The Republican field of governor races in 2026 is becoming increasingly competitive. US leader Byron Donald officially declared his candidacy and received approval from Trump. Florida first lady Casey DeSantis is also reportedly considering a run encouraged by major Republican donors.
The polling data shows Getz, behind both Donald and DeSantis, is heading backwards. For example, a May 2025 poll showed Donald was leading by 29%, Desantis was leading by 28%, and Gaetz was leading by 10%.

Gaetz remains a polarizing figure within the Republican Party, but his potential candidacy adds complexity to the upcoming governor race. His political future relies heavily on the evolving dynamics of public receptions and Republican primary elections.
