Estero Bay, Fla. (WFLA) – Rescued in Estero Bay by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Committee last week.

The FWC said staff rescued a wounded manatee on a recent ship.

Manatees are usually found in coastal areas with vast beds of rivers, bays, canals, estuaries and sea grass.

The FWC said that helping to protect the manatees can be done as follows:

Do not practice smart boats by avoiding navigation through shallow grass beds. It does not contribute to the problem of water chemistry changes caused by spills. Using lattices rather than boards when building or repairing docks, the Grete ship allows sunlight to penetrate the grass that lives below.

The rescued manatee was taken to Zutampa for treatment.

According to the FWC, manatees are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972. It is illegal to feed, harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, infuriate, or abuse.

To report an injury, death, harassment, or an orphan manatee, call the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-3922.
