LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office indicted Leonard Hagar for the murder of a 13-year-old girl in Summit Township 40 years ago.

The office reports that prosecutor Kelsey Guernsey and Jackson County Sheriff Gary Schwett have charged Hagar with murder – first degree felony murder and murder – second degree murder.

Hugall is currently in Florida and will be handed over to Jackson County.

Felony murder is sentenced to mandatory life sentences in Michigan without parole.

The office reports that the investigation began in 1984 when a 13-year-old girl was reported missing in Summit Township. The girl was never found.

The investigation continued over the years and peaked with Hugall being charged in connection with her loss.

“This arrest shows that time will not reduce our resolve. Detectives Sergeant Kelly Eversoll and Detective Mark Easter show a sequel dedication to this case. Telling Hugall after all these years is a testament to their commitment and the fact that we will never stop.

Hugall will be arrested at Jackson County 12th District Court following extradition from Florida.
