U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Florida law enforcement agencies announced over the weekend that nearly 800 arrests had been made for multi-day immigration enforcement efforts.
ICE touted “tide waves” as “a very successful operation,” pointing to a unique partnership between local governments and federal authorities.
“In the first partnership between state and federal partners, Ice Miami and Florida law enforcement this week arrested nearly 800 illegal aliens in the first four days of #OPerationTidalWave.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) praised the joint effort in a post on social platforms on Saturday, adding that it was “a model for FL and [the Department of Homeland Security] A partnership to bring about major consequences regarding immigration enforcement and deportation. ”
“Florida is actively working with the Trump administration to lead the country in its efforts to enforce immigration and deportation work!” Desantis was added to another X post.
This operation leaps towards ICE’s 287(g) program. This allows ICE to represent local law enforcement agencies to help enforce federal immigration laws.
In a post on X, ICE encouraged other local law enforcement agencies to consider partnering with future agencies.
Agency has faced voice resistance from several city leaders who have tried to welcome immigrants in the past and criticize the Trump administration’s immigration policy.
The operation boosts multiple deportations that have led the White House to step up immigration enforcement efforts across the country and fulfill the promise of a key campaign by President Trump while questioning the legitimate process that critics have been given to remove targets.
Acting Ice Director Todd Lyons promoted a partnership with a local Florida official last week, telling ABC News, “I think the main reason this operation is important is because it’s the first.”
“It’s not just doing what we have, it’s a spike in all federal partners together with homeland security investigations and enforcement. [and] There is removal work, which is the executive branch of all ice, but it also uses all 287(g) partners in Florida. We use state, local and county law enforcement to support our business,” he continued.
“So this is one of the first big missions we’ve ever done,” the Lions added. “We have brought a ‘governmental’ approach in cooperative jurisdictions that want to safeguard our neighbourhood communities and help remove public safety threats from our neighbours. ”
