Land Use and Development Regulations
The Florida Senate bill removes the obligations that farm owners must adhere to before they are permitted to develop on their property.
Some groups have opposed the measure, claiming that approval could be environmentally friendly without local voters speaking at local hearings.
Others are cautious about the measure, saying Florida needs to develop a plan to address pressing challenges brought about by rapid population growth, such as infrastructure issues and the depletion of natural resources.
These same groups argue that if the bill is passed, it will take power from local county commissioners who should have the final say on new growth.
Proponents of the measure say it will be a positive move for small communities looking to expand their tax base.
Funding for rural communities
Florida Sen. Corey Simon (R) wants to create a Rural Prosperity Bureau within the Department of Commerce. The role of the department will approve funds for improving infrastructure in rural communities. There are also items within the Act that require higher funding for small rural road programs and expand access to education, commercial and healthcare.
Potential changes in Florida schools
Some education proposals moving through the Legislative Committee include:
• Students are prohibited from using their mobile phones all day during school periods.
•Elementary school cursive writing guidance is required.
• Changes in study time when students start time do not occur late in the morning. This applies to junior and high school students.
