MIAMI, Fla. (WFLA) – NASCAR concludes a hot weekend with Homestead, which began with a brush fire that consumed more than 25,000 acres before being included on Sunday.
For drivers of the NASCAR Cup Series, hot action was on the truck.
Kyle Larson dominated the race weekend and won the Track Series race on Friday. He also led the laps most on Saturday in the Xfinity race, then lost after paying attention to the late race.
Larson won the first Cup Series victory of the season on Sunday, but he had a hard time starting the day.
Ryan Branny had the car to beat the majority of the race until lap 207 when an engine was out of control, opening a considerable lead on the field. He experienced roughly the same problems with Phoenix at the beginning of the season. The engine breakdown ended on Blaney’s day, but opened the door for others.
Bubba Wallace took advantage of this situation to gain a race lead. Wallace had the fastest lap during Saturday’s practice and seemed ready for a victory, but Larson managed to pursue him through a string of problems and took the lead on 261 laps.
Larson says the victory concluded a great weekend.
“It was just a fun weekend. Obviously, I wish I had that win last night, but that’s part of the race. It was just a strong weekend and today’s race was very tough and challenging,” Larson said.
The driver of Hendrick Motorsports almost experienced a disaster early in the race at Pit Row as Josh Berry hit Larson’s car and bouncing off Joey Logano. The collision was stiff enough to drill holes in the side of Larson’s car, so he wasn’t sure how it would work on the truck.
“I mean, you’ll never know. He took me there and that probably hurt our day a lot. But yeah, there’s a lot of fight scars in our car,” Larson said.
Still, for Larson and his Hendrick team, the victory was satisfying.
“A challenging victory. It’s probably one of the coolest things in my Cup career up to this point and I’m happy to have it,” Larson said.
