BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – A man wanted in the murder of a 15-year-old girl in Brevard County has been arrested following a traffic stop, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
Troopers were conducting traffic enforcement on Interstate 4 Saturday night for vehicles traveling over 165 mph.
Deputies identified the passenger as 20-year-old Jonterich Smith, who was wanted by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office in connection with a shooting that occurred last week.
According to an arrest affidavit, on Monday, Oct. 6, at approximately 4:30 p.m., the BCSO Communications Center received multiple calls regarding shots fired in front of Anchor’s Seafood & Chicken in Cocoa.
At the scene, officers said they saw two men with gunshot wounds outside the front of the business and an unresponsive 15-year-old girl with multiple gunshot wounds inside a white sedan parked in front of the restaurant.
The victims were taken to a local hospital, where the teen succumbed to her injuries.
Surveillance video from a nearby business showed multiple suspects arriving in a black Dodge Durango. The suspects then exited the vehicle and began a gunfight between the two, firing into the white sedan. Dodge then fled the scene.
The affidavit states Brevard County investigators used a license plate reader to track the vehicle to Smith’s home. There they found a Durango with bullet holes and a broken rear window.
On Saturday, October 11, Volusia County deputies arrested Smith as he headed to a concert in Orlando.
Deputies arrested Smith along with the driver of the vehicle and searched the vehicle, where they discovered two firearms: a handgun with an extended magazine and an AR-15 style pistol.
Smith is charged with first-degree premeditated murder, aggravated assault with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
The sheriff’s office continues to search for Xavier Butler, who is also wanted in connection with the shooting.
