Volsia County, Fla. (WFLA) – Two law enforcement officers almost hit an SUV at the scene of the crash early Sunday, according to the Volsia Sheriff’s Office.

Veterans Services Organization (VSO) Sergeant and Florida Highway Patrol troopers were at the scene of a car-deer collision as the SUV drove on the highway at highway speeds.

Bodycam’s video shows a police officer running into the grass when the SUV crashes into a VSO Sergeant’s police car, crashing into the back of the car, hitting a deer, and then spun onto the highway.

“My life flashed before I could look right there,” VSO Sergeant said. He checked the driver in his first accident.

When the first responder spoke to VSO Sergeant, he said, “If these rumble strips hadn’t been there, I would have been dead.” He said the noise from the rumble strip warned them that the car would hit them.

In a Facebook post, Volusia Sheriff’s Office said it would remain vigilant for emergency lighting and move for first responders.

“This was a moment away from the tragedy,” the Volsia Sheriff’s office said.
