TALHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) – Hundreds of fraudulent SunPas websites were closed Monday by the Florida Attorney General’s Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Office of Cyber Fraud Analysis Support Team.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, the fake sites targeted Sunpass users with fake tolls and phishing schemes in an attempt to steal personal and financial information.

“These fraudulent Sunpass websites are trying to prey on unsuspecting Floridians and tourists and steal personal information through fake claim notifications. To close these sites and protect customers We are taking prompt action on the issue. Due to tolls that could be fraudulent,” Attorney General John Gard said.
Floridians who receive a fake toll text or email should:
Contact Sunpass or E-ZPass directly to check the source using the customer service numbers listed on the official website. Use the official Sunppass or E-ZPass portal to check for unpaid tolls. Know that messages that threaten penalties if no immediate payments are made are probably fraudulent.
Scammers create websites that are very similar to the official toll payment portal. They will then send phishing emails and text messages containing links to these websites, the Attorney General said.
The messages people receive usually include claims of unpaid tolls and fines to create urgency for users to access fake websites.
When they appear on the website, scammers seek personal and financial information that they can use to commit identity theft or fraud.
