What is the presidential oath of office?
According to USA.gov, the vice president-elect will be the first to take the oath, repeating the same oath as senators, congressmen and other federal officials.
This oath has been in use since 1884 and is:
“I pledge to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic, to swear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution, and to freely discharge this obligation without restriction. I solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will fulfill the purpose of spiritual reservation and avoidance, and the duties of the office I am about to assume. So help me, God. ”
At noon, the President-elect will take the oath set forth in Article II, Section 1 of the United States Constitution:
“I solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States and to the best of my ability preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.”
