Hair Salon Overcoming obstacles to reopen the year after Hurricane Helen

st. Petersburg, Fla. (WFLA) – A bright day at a deco salon preparing to reopen at its new location at 30th Ave North in St. Pete.

On the anniversary of Hurricane Helen’s Wrath, this colorful disco-inspired studio ring acronym is now more than ever.

The owner, Lindsay Miller, is a type that searches for silver lining.

“It’s the idea of deco. I wake up in the morning and tell myself to dream, empower, create and overcome everything, including hurricanes,” Miller said.

Miller’s salon in 2013 was flooded, damaged and filled with mold after Hurricane Helen. She took it as a sign to continue filming bright poststorm rainbows across Corey Avenue.

“It really elicited the belief that people would do the right thing, help their neighbors and truly recover not only as themselves but as a town and community,” Miller said.

However, Miller will face more heartbreak after exhausting every opportunity to resume in her original location.

“And after the storm, it became so toxic to me. I just had to go,” Miller said.

She says this new start requires all her faith and finances. She calls Nailtech, Emily Zilman, her trench buddy, and weathers the storm on her side.

“And now, let’s be here and start something completely different and new, and it’s exciting,” Zeilman said.

For Miller, reaching the other side of that phorical rainbow is a word.

“Resilience,” Miller said.

The deco salon is set to open in the coming weeks.
