The National Institutes of Health (NIH) says its mission is to increase health, extend lifespans and reduce illness and disability by supporting and conducting scientific research.
However, American Gun Owners (GOA) want the government’s Department of Efficiency (DOGE) to investigate federal agencies, claiming that the Severan NIH grant is directly in violation of the Dickey amendment, which prohibits the use of federal funds to advocate or promote gun control.
In 1996, Dickey’s amendment was a provision in the federal spending bill that prohibited federal funds from being used to “advocate or promote gun control.”
On X, a social network previously known as Twitter, Gore said the multi-million dollar grant totals include research and funding for programs that “clearly drive the gun control agenda.”
The research and programs listed by Gore are as follows:
$3.6 million for seniors to “retirement of firearms”
$1.2 million for “check-in” for “home guns”
$2.1 million to study “firearm possession” by Asian Americans
$1.1 million for “gun ownership and risk”
$650,000 for “Flame-free and abandonment of firearms”
$333,000 to “promote” gun confiscation laws and waiting periods for “effective” $333,000
“Crime Reporting… $428K to investigate ways to reinforce racist stereotypes
“Firearm Storage” and Forfeiture Act $518K
$490K to compare the state’s “gun policy”
$349K to assess whether “firearms law reduces mortality.”
$126,000 for “increasing gun violence among black Americans”
Aidan Johnston, Gore’s director of federal affairs, says these grants are illegal grants and Doge needs to step in and look into how the federal government continues to circumvent restrictions to impose gun control.
“Hey, Doge, these illegal NIH grants should be cancelled as soon as possible. These grants violate Dickey’s amendments, which state that CDC and NIH money “may not be used to advocate or promote gun control.”
