TALHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) – Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed two bills that have been renamed “The Gulf of Mexico” in Florida and have renamed “The Gulf of Mexico.”
The bill (HB 575 and HB 549) was approved by Desantis on Monday, requiring state agencies to update geographical material to reflect the “Gulf of America,” and the collection of educational materials and library media centers must also be changed.
The effective date is July 1, 2025.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 20th, which directed the US Secretary of the Interior to rename the “Gulf of Mexico” to the “Gulf of America.”
State and local governments will need to update official documents, websites, signs, publications and other materials to reflect changes to the new designation, the bill analysis said.
