TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State University’s Institute for Governance and Civics will host a fascinating and timely discussion on Tuesday, November 4, with guest Daniel Di Martino, a Venezuelan-born economist who witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of socialism on his home country.

The event, titled “How Socialism Destroyed Venezuela,” will be held at the FSU Student Union Club Down Under from 6 to 7 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public.

Di Martino tells his personal story of growing up in Venezuela and fleeing the country’s economic collapse. He explains how government control, corruption, and mismanagement turned one of the richest countries in Latin America into a state of crisis and scarcity. His talk will also explore lessons that other countries can learn from Venezuela’s experience and the importance of protecting economic freedom.

Currently a Ph.D. candidate in economics at Columbia University and a graduate fellow at the Manhattan Institute, Di Martino has become a leading voice on the dangers of socialism and its real-world consequences. Since leaving Venezuela in 2016, she has dedicated her work to educating others about the policies that destroyed her homeland and advocating for freedom around the world.
