VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — A former Volusia County deputy has been arrested and charged with writing fraudulent checks to himself.
Douglas Meyer, 37, was charged with an organized fraud scheme after writing bad checks from one credit union to another.
According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, Meyer plans to exploit the time it takes for checks to clear to gain access to funds.
During this time, Meyer showed up at one of the credit unions in uniform and asked to have a hold removed from a check he had deposited.
“This former lawmaker’s badge will be melted down,” the VSO said in a Facebook post.
Meyer worked at VSO from 2020 to 2024 and again in 2025 until he resigned in August.
His credit union reported the fraud to the sheriff’s office in September, according to VSO.
Meyer turned himself in Sunday night.
“My goal is to hold him accountable and never work in law enforcement again,” the VSO said.
