Tampa, Fla. (WFLA) – The federal deadline for filing taxes is Tuesday, April 15th.
However, the IRS has extended the deadline until May 1st for those living in Florida.
However, thieves are also working while working on taxes. They posed as trustworthy sources, such as the IRS and experts who work for tax services companies. And now, consumer experts are warning you that there’s more time to fool you.
Don’t forget that the IRS will not send text messages or ask for money over the phone.
Keep an eye out for fake IRS emails promising a refund, scam texts claiming “your account is pending,” and misleading tax advice.
The controversy continues to “hope Florida” contribution
Another scheme affecting taxpayers in the Tampa Bay Area is fake from the 1099s.
I’ve heard of Better Call Behnken from several people who have received tax forms from companies that have never done business.
You may remember Clint and Rebra Johnson. They were unsure in November when they received a 1099-K tax form in mail indicating that $9,306.57 had been collected through 437 transactions.
Consumer investigator Shannon Behnken has been able to help obtain the revised 1099 form and is currently monitoring their credits.
If this occurs, please call the entity that submitted the form and submit a fraud report to the IRS.
