Auto imports to Florida are surged to over $10 billion a year, according to data from the US Census Bureau. Import values remained stable from 2015 to 2021, with an average of just over $5 billion each year. This trend changed dramatically in 2022, when imports jumped over $9 billion and imports spiked over consecutive years of over $10 billion in both 2023 and 2024.
In addition to the fully assembled vehicle, Florida also brought in $1.6 billion worth of car bodies, trailers and parts. Those numbers could face change if they revive tariffs following the 90-day suspension that President Trump announced yesterday.
Approximately 90% of Florida’s automobile imports come from just four countries: Japan, Mexico, Germany and Slovakia. Japan is leading the pack, exporting more than $4.3 billion worth of vehicles to Florida in 2024 alone. Mexico continues at $2.6 billion, while Germany accounts for $1.9 billion.
Though not generally recognized as a major auto hub, Slovakia plays a key role in Florida’s import market. The country has hosted manufacturing facilities for major automakers, including Volkswagen, Kia and Jaguar Land Rover, contributing to its presence in the global automotive supply chain.
