DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (WFLA) – The Daytona Beach Police Department says a woman tragically died after being violently attacked by a dog in her home last week.
Police responded to the victim’s home around 7pm on Friday, October 11, after becoming concerned after being unable to contact her boyfriend. She didn’t answer the phone, so when he arrived at her house, he found her unresponsive on the floor.

He called the police, who arrived to find the victim, Monica Emerson, 38, seriously injured and four dogs running freely around the house. Police said the group consisted of a large mixed-breed male and three of his offspring.
Police did not provide any further information about the dog’s breed or whether it belonged to Emerson.

She suffered injuries consistent with an animal attack, and investigators found no evidence of foul play or human involvement, DBPD said.
The investigation is still ongoing, but police said they believe Emerson experienced some kind of medical emergency and lost consciousness, causing the dog to attack her and cause fatal injuries.
Animal control recovered the dogs and took them to Volusia County Animal Control, where they will be kept for 10 days before being euthanized.
