MEXICO CITY (AP) — A Florida court awarded the Mexican government a massive civil ruling against a former safety officer on Thursday.
Judge Lisa Walsh ordered Genaro Garcia Luna to pay more than $748 million and hand over $1.7 billion to his wife, Linda Christina Pereira.
Garcia Luna was sentenced to more than 38 years in a US prison last October and took huge bribery to help drug traffickers.
The former Mexican public security secretary was convicted in 2023 by a New York ju judge of accepting bribery to protect the violent Sinaloa cartel he is likely fighting for. He is the highest level Mexican government official convicted in the United States.
He served as the public security secretary to then-President Felipe Calderon from 2006 to 2012.
After leaving the office, Garcia Luna moved to Florida. His lawyer said he was a legitimate businessman who consulted in Florida before his arrest in 2019.
García Luna and Associates were Mexico’s top security officers from 2006 to 2012, and for the next six years they founded companies that won 30 suspicious government contracts.
The contracts were for surveillance, surveillance, communications equipment used in prisons and intelligence reporting operations. The contract is likely to have risen. In one case, the contract was simply forged.
Garcia Luna is said to have led money with Barbados offshore accounts from prison security and the government’s intelligence report technology contract. I then sent to Miami to buy some flashy condos and vintage cars.
Garcia Luna and his companions have purchased several vintage Mustangs from the 1960s and 70s. They also bought luxury sports cars like the Lamborghini and Ferrari.
The Florida lawsuit was filed in September 2021.
