JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WFLA) – A Florida man died Tuesday after suffering cardiac arrest during a hockey game.

According to a report by NBC affiliate WTLV, the 64-year-old Gainesville man collapsed after being hit in the chest with a hockey puck at the community first igloo ice rink.

Witnesses told Jacksonville Sheriff’s office that the goalkeeper left the game after a hit, saying he was feeling unwell. He was taken to hospital, where he later died.

His family reported that he had no pre-existing medical conditions.

Jerry Stevens, Ratt, ATC. Duval County Public Schools Supervisory District Sports Medicine said the power from the hit would likely disrupt the rhythm of a man’s heart. He said the man may have been suffering from Commotio Cordis, a rare condition caused by a blow to the chest.

Alex Reed, communications director for the Jacksonville Icemen Hockey Team and Community First Igloo, called the incident “trauma and unexpected.”
