Florida introduces tax credits for guns, ammunition and outdoor gear

TALHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) – Gov. Ron DeSantis began Florida’s new second amended sales tax leave on Monday. From ammunition and guns to fishing rods and camping equipment, the 2025 second revised sales tax holiday will continue until December 31st.

“I know there are some of our residents here who save a pretty good change,” DeSantis said.

While the new sales tax leave is attractive to gun owners, some lawmakers have fought this tax credit hard, unleashing the fierce debate on their homes and Senate floors.
“These students at FSU were appealing to us not to include this in the tax package just two days after the shooting,” said Rep. Anna Eskamani (D-Orlando).

During the debate, critics of the move said this could not have come at a worse time, passing the tax package months after the fatal mass shootings on Florida State University’s campus.
“It’s very difficult in this state to want to encourage more ammunition and more firearms. We already have a lot,” Eskamani said.

Even the opposition, DeSantis plans to continue fighting for the freedom of the Second Amendment.
“For years I’ve said it’s something I’m signing up – it seems like everyone’s Republicans are the Second Amendment and everyone is primitive and pounding their chests, standing up to Tallahassee and saying they won’t comply, they won’t get off the ground,” DeSantis said.

Though it has not yet passed the finish line, Lt. Col. Jay Collins previously led a law in favour of the Second Amendment. He hopes that more effort will move towards the next session.
“Hopefully this is a year, but we’ll continue to fight for those freedoms and daily rights until we get them all back,” Collins said.

Desantis addressed questions about gun safety concerns on Monday, saying “rights bring responsibility,” encouraging people to know what they are doing when dealing with firearms.
