TALHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) — The Florida House of Representatives is proposing the largest sales tax in state history from 6% to 5.25%.
House Speaker Daniel Perez announced the proposal Wednesday during his speech on the state budget.
The budget, commonly known as the General Approvals Act, will be released on Friday, Perez said.
“Members, the proposed House GAA will be historic,” Perez said. “Our budget is not only lower than the governor’s proposed budget, but lower than the budget passed in the previous legislature.”
The proposed budget from Gov. Desantis is $115.6 billion, and a FAQ issued by his office says this would be a $3 billion cut from the 2024-25 budget.
Perez said the state has a spending problem and the permanent 0.75% cut would save Floridians nearly $5 billion a year.
The current 6% sales tax has been in place since 1988, and if the reduction is approved, Perez said Florida would be the only state to permanently reduce its sales tax.
