Florida is one step closer to becoming the next state of banning fluoride from drinking water.
The Florida home passed the SB 700 on Tuesday. This is a broad bill that includes provisions that prevent local governments from using “water quality additives” for health-related purposes. The bill does not expressly say fluoride, but state lawmakers have confirmed it will be removed.
The bill also prohibits misconceptions of plant-based foods such as chicken, meat, milk, and eggs.
The bill passed both the state House and the Senate, and will move to Gov. Ron DeSantis’s desk for final approval.
Fluoride naturally occurs in the water, but fluorination of water allows the government to adjust fluoride to optimal levels to combat tooth decay. And removing fluoride can increase the rate of tooth decay in children and low-income communities, experts say.
Statewide, at least 900,000 Floridians live in jurisdictions where they have already removed fluoride. The bill requires all local governments to comply with the lawsuit.
