TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WFLA) — A 10th grade student at Florida High School was charged with battery after attacking a teacher during class, the Leon County Sheriff’s Office said.

On Monday, lawmakers said teachers at Leon High School in Tallahassee had been approaching students to drink drinks and use their cell phones in class. The school’s policy prohibits both of these in the classroom.

According to the sheriff’s office, the student, whose identity was not released, slapped the teacher, pushed him to the ground, and punched him several times.

The teen was arrested, charged with a school official’s battery and taken to a juvenile evaluation center. Students will also face discipline according to the student code and behavior of Leon County schools.

WFLA.com has contacted Leon High School and the Sheriff’s Office for additional information.
