According to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, Scrogins told deputies that when the homeowner opened the door, the dog quickly latched it into his arm and leg.
She managed to escape, but collapsed outside the home the homeowner and witnesses tried to help before emergency responders arrived.
Due to the severity of her injuries, Scrogins was airlifted to HCA Florida Fort Walton Destin Hospital. She was later transferred to Tampa for further treatment.
Authorities say the dog owner voluntarily surrendered to animal control in Walton County without arguing.
Walton County Animal Control keeps dogs for a standard 10-day observation period to check for rabies and ensure public safety. After this observation, the dog will be euthanized.
Authorities did not file charges against the dog owner because there was no evidence of previous attacks or negligence.
Scroggins’ family shared photos of her injuries, but some were deemed too graphic to be published.
Law enforcement reports describe the injury as deep wounds and punctures on her head, arms and lower body. Officials noted that when the first responder arrived she was bleeding severely.
Authorities said the incident underscored the importance of responsible pet ownership and ensures that large or offensive breeds are properly trapped when visitors arrive.
Dogs of this size and strength require proper training and control as improper handling can lead to serious incidents.
Florida laws state that if negligence is involved, the pet owner is responsible for the attack, but the dog has no history of the attack, so in this case it is a quote or legal matter. No measures were issued.
Animal control officials are urging residents to take extra precautions with large dogs to prevent similar incidents.
For now, Scroggins remains at Tampa Hospital where he is undergoing treatment. Her family has not publicly shared specific details about her recovery.
The Doordash community has expressed support with some drivers and says they feel they are delivering to the house with their big dogs.
Authorities said no further investigations were expected and the dogs would be euthanized once the observation period was over.
