TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Florida highway speeds could rise as new bills pass the Florida Legislature and arrive at the governor’s desk.
The bill, SB 462, is currently moving through the Florida Senate. The Transportation Commission vote was passed on Wednesday.
The bill will increase the speed limit for Interstate and Florida turnpikes from 70 mph to 75 mph.
The proposal calls for the speed limit for rural four-lane highways to 70 mph from 65 mph, and Florida’s Department of Transportation can set the maximum speed limit for all other roads to 65 mph.

The transport bill also allows FDOT to expand from US 27 in Polk County to Interstate 75 in Hillsboro County.
The bill calls on FDOT to develop a report on the expansion of I-4 and I-75.
This report should include detailed cost forecasts and schedules for project development and environmental surveys, design, road rights acquisition, and construction.
The report will be by the governor, President Florida of the Senate and Chairman Florida of the House of Representatives by the end of the year.
