New York City officials confirmed that two people have died, 19 people have been injured and the Brooklyn Bridge has not been damaged.
Federal officials confirmed on May 18 that they would be dispatched to investigate a crash crash of a Mexican Navy’s tall ship at Brooklyn Bridge on the night of May 17, which left at least two people dead.
Cuauhtémoc was visiting New York City on a global Goodwill tour when the accident occurred. Video footage of the incident shows the ship steadily moving towards the bridge before the three masts collided.
Video footage shows considerable traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge during the 8:20pm EDT collision. Officials said no one on the bridge was injured.
After the collision, the ship, which had 277 people on board, was floating on the East River pier, video footage shows. Onlookers were also seen running away as the boat approached the pier.
“Personal and equipment status is reviewed by the Navy and local governments providing support,” the Post reads, according to the translation. “The Navy reaffirms its commitment to personnel safety, operational transparency and excellent training for future officers of the Mexican Navy.”
Mexican President Claudia Sinbaum lamented the loss of two crew members.
According to a translation of Sinbaum’s post, the Mexican Navy, along with local governments, is “currently treating the injured.”
“The Mexican ambassador and staff of the Mexican Consul General in New York are supporting the Navy,” she said.
