Lauderhill’s father passed away Sunday after trying to save two children who appear to be suffering in the waters off Fort Lauderdale Beach.
At about 7:20pm, Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue was reported to have been drowned near B Ocean Resort on Seabreeze Boulevard, on the southern tip of Public Beach. The city’s marine rescue lifeguards were on duty at 7pm, but they were first on the scene after hearing the phone.
They were able to save a young girl who was struggling while her father, Antwon Wilson, 33, was nearby in the water to help. Fire and rescue reports say the second adult was about to leave the water after being overwhelmed.
The second child was also rescued, according to Fort Lauderdale police.
The lifeguard returned to the ocean and placed Wilson underwater a few minutes later. They took him to the shore and paramedics began life-saving measures.
One of the children, bystanders and Wilson, were taken to Broward Health Medical Center, where Wilson was pronounced dead.
An investigation is underway, but the death appears to be the result of a random drowsing, Fort Lauderdale police said.
